What is Schofield equation?
Schofield equation is the name of the formula used to calculate the basic metabolic velocity of the individual (BMR). Basal metabolism is the amount of energy that the body must use to maintain life. Energy is needed for metabolism at cellular level, hormone and enzyme synthesis, temperature maintenance, muscle movement and more. BMR measures basal metabolism over a period of time, usually over 24 hours. In fact, Schofield's equation is one of a set of equations that calculate the minimum daily caloric, the weight loss must be avoided on the basis of the age group and the gender of the individual.
BMR represents 45 to 70 percent of calories burned during the day. The high disparity of this percentage is secondary to the huge variability of BMR depending on age, sex and physical activity. The remaining percentage of calories used rely primarily on the degree of physical activity spent by the individual. For sedentary individuals WZPLOVNO into small physical activity BMR will represent a higher percentage burncalories. On the other hand, physically active teenage boys will have a smaller percentage of their daily caloric expenditures.
Internet calculators are available for Schofield equations. However, the table is the easiest way to find out how the age and sex of the individual affect the appropriate Schofield equation necessary to determine the basal metabolic speed. As shown in the table below, men have a higher total BMR than women and younger individuals have a higher BMR than their older ones. Greater than the expected constant 14.8 below the female column in persons aged 18 to 30 years represents higher caloric expenditures typical of pregnancy and lactation. Overall, larger BMR men compared to women are attributed to their composition of the body: men have a greater ratio of fat to fat, except their usually more physical activity.Schofield equation
