What is Advocaat?

Advocaat is a creamy European liqueur made of eggs or egg yolks, brandy and sugar. The ingredients may also include honey, vanilla and cream or evaporated milk. It has a taste similar to cream and a smooth consistency and ranges from 14 to 20 percent of the volume of alcohol (ABV). The drink is similar to Eggnog, the Mexican Rompop drink and the Polish drink Ajerkoniak. Advocaat is traditionally used during Easter in the Netherlands.

According to legend, the name for Advocaat is derived from the Dutch word for avocado. Probably the first version of the BFeon was made with avocadom, Dutch settlers living in Surinam and Recife in South America, and because there were no avocado in the Netherlands, they simulated eggs with eggs. But this story is probably nothing but folk etymology. Advocaat is also a Dutch for "Laywer" and the drink can be so called because it was once considered a legal drink.

Advocaat is used as an aperitif before eating or digestif after eating, often in a wideA glass complemented by cocoa powder and whipped cream. It can also be poured through waffles, cakes, pastries, ice cream and other sweets. Usually it serves as the top of cocktails. In Italy, especially in ski resorts, it is mixed with hot coffee, brandy and rum or whiskey to create a bombardino. Another popular Advocaat cocktail is snowball, which adds sparkling lemonade to the liqueur.

Advocaat can be purchased in bottles or fresh. The varied variety is often much thinner and does not contain egg whites. In continental Europe, the liqueur is often administered by a very strong and consumed spoon such as pudding.

If you want to create your own Advocat, beat ten egg yolks with half a teaspoon of salt and one and third cup of sugar, slowly pouring one and one half of the cup or cognac into the mixture. When whipping, heat the mixture in a pan on low fire. Be careful not to do thatThey led to a boil, otherwise the alcohol began to evaporate.

When the liquid covers the back of the spoon, it is ready to get out of the heat. Whisk in two tablespoons of vanilla extract and the liqueur is complete. Can be served warm or chilled. Top with whipped cream and cocoa powder and serve in a large glass with a spoon.
