What is oenology?

Oenology is a scientific study of the creation of winery. It includes the whole process from growing grapes to marketing finished products. The professional, who is trained in enology, known as an eenologist, works on the development of the best tasting wines. Those who work in the field of oenology begin the winery process by selecting vineyards. Oenologists are trained in soil chemistry and climate and impact on the quality of grapes and fermentation process. Then they will use this knowledge to select the vineyard of grapes for wine production. Some grape varieties may need to be selected in accurate times to maintain their optimal taste. The oenologist can distinguish the conditions of grapes according to their colors and tastes.

Once oenologists determine the grapes in their peak conditions, grapes are methodically selected to prevent breaking or coloring that can damage their tastes. The stems are removed from the grapes as soon as possible after the selection, as they can cause the grapes to taste bitter. The oenologist can then supervise the preparation of grapes.

Oenology includes scientific differences between grapes for red and white wines. The red grapes are crushed by intact skins to provide a more intense taste. White wine is usually made of light green grapes that are crushed, with the skin filtered from juice for a finer taste.

For sugars of grape juices to become alcoholic, eenologists add cultivated yeasts or other sugars to crushed grapes. The grapes are then placed in a container to the ferment. The type of container and the amount of fermentation time depends on the variety of wine produced. For example, the reddish are generally fermented in oak barrels and white wines are fermented in stainless steel containers.

oenologists are trained to classify wines by appearance, taste and smell. As soon as the wine ferment for the period of time, the onologist will taste it to determine whether it is ready for the package. After the wine is filled and marked, it may be necessary to ageOut for a specified time to achieve its maximum taste. Some wines may be okay to sell immediately while others are years old.

Although eenology is generally focused on the creation of winery, it may also include wine marketing. Oenologists may encounter buyers to promote their wines. Those who work in the marketing aspect can also ensure wine tasting so that potential customers can sample their products.
